Barwick-LaFayette Airport was built in 1954.

The facility can accommodate general aviation aircraft up to and including small business jets.  The runway cannot support the weight of large commercial aircraft.

In 1999, with the assistance of the Georgia Department of Transportation, the runway was lengthened about 700 feet, and the runway surface repaired and remarked.   The aircraft parking ramp was also resurfaced.

In 2000 and 2001, the first set of 10 T-hangars was constructed for plane storage and rented.  The runway lighting system was upgraded, and the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved, developed and published the facility's first instrument approach system.  This system allows corporate, as well as some local air traffic, to use the airport in inclement weather.

In 2004 and 2005, the airport received approval to construct new taxiways and a second set of 10 T-hangars.

Later this year, the airport is scheduled to receive a new ground communication outlet (GCO), which will improve the facility's radio communications with the FAA.  The airport will also receive an automated weather observation system, which will allow pilots to receive current, up-to-date weather information about the airport 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Upgrades at the airport have included building additional T-hangars for aircraft storage and extending the runway.
